The HD War – Did anyone win?
A triumphant Jack Tretton marched out at E3, embarrassed himself by mocking the late Jack Palance and then went on to declare that Sony and it's Blu-Ray format had won the HD war. With all the confidence of George W Bush after squashing Afghanistan, Tretton went on to detail how PS3 with it's built in Blu-Ray (the most future-proof on the market) had been instrumental in crushing HD-DVD.
He then dropped Sony's big surprise for E3 (amazing he dropped any as E3 ranks so low in the pecking order these days) that 'tonight' Sony will be launching it's movie download service on PSN. A service where you can rent HD movies for $5.99 or buy them for $14.99 (around half the price of a Blu-Ray movie).
That's right, after announcing the victory of Blu-Ray, due to PS3, he announced the means by which Blu-Ray will die, due to PS3. This will also prove the final nail in the coffin for the already doomed UMD format. With the introduction of 16GB memory sticks and the ability to transfer films from PS3 to PSP, surely the end is nigh.
For those of you who doubt the mighty Blu-Ray will die, just look at the demise of the CD. Dominant for so many years, the highly popular CD format was squashed in just a few months by the MP3 era. Sony, who have been (for the past 12 months) encouraging us to by games online, have now given us a reason to dump their own format, the first format they have actually had success with. Add to this PS3's flexibility, with the ability to upgrade the HDD (500GB is about £100) and you have no reason to ever buy a disc again (except when they are 50p in the bargain bucket after the format dies).
It seems like Tretton and Bush have many qualities in common: Stupidity, arrogance and friendly fire.....
